Pickleball Rules & Scoring Guide

Learn the basics of pickleball while you play

  • All serves must be underhand with an upward arc
  • Double Bounce Rule: After the serve, both the serve return AND the next shot must bounce before any volleys
  • This means 3 total shots must be played after bouncing: serve, return, then one more shot
  • No volleys allowed in the 7-foot non-volley zone (kitchen)
  • Only the serving team can score points
  • You cannot volley (hit ball in air) while standing in the kitchen
  • You CAN enter the kitchen to play a ball that has bounced
  • Both feet must be completely outside kitchen before you can volley again
  • If momentum carries you into kitchen after a volley outside, it's a fault
  • The kitchen line itself is part of the kitchen - don't step on it while volleying
  • If your partner steps in kitchen during your volley, it's also a fault
  • Games are typically played to 11 points, must win by 2
  • Score is called as: serving team score - receiving team score - server number
  • Example: '8-5-2' means serving team has 8, receiving team has 5, server #2 is serving
  • First team to reach 11 points and lead by 2 points wins
  • Serve starts from the right side when score is even
  • Each team has two servers (except at game start)
  • When serving team loses rally, it's called a 'side out'
  • First server serves until side out, then second server serves
  • After both servers lose, serving switches to other team
  • Court is 20ft × 44ft (same width as badminton court)
  • Net height: 36 inches at ends, 34 inches at center
  • Paddles are solid (no strings) and smaller than tennis rackets
  • Plastic ball with holes (similar to wiffle ball)
